The most prominent factor influencing the salaries in Vietnam is experience level.

A person with 2 to 5 years of experience typically earns around 32% more than a person with less than 2 years of experience. A person with 5 to 10 years of experience would earn 36% more than those with 2 to 5 years of experience. A jump to 10 to 15 years of experience provides them with a further 21% increment. Lastly, those with more than 20 years of experience earn, on average, 9% more than those with 15 to 20 years of experience.

Having a certificate or diploma can earn around 17% more than a fresh high schooler. Upgrading from a diploma to a bachelor’s degree presents an increment of 24%. A Ph.D. holder earns an average of 23% more than a master’s degree holder. 

However, a change in salary always depends upon the location and most importantly career fields.

With a wide range of professions in an even diverse range of industries, there is a huge divide in salary levels within Vietnam. The sectors paying the highest average salary in Vietnam are Mineral and Metallurgy (9.2million VND/month or $403/month), banking (7.6million VND/month or $333/month) while similar jobs within other sectors like Textile or Food pay a small 2.5 million VND ($109) to 3.1 million VND ($135) to their labors per month. 

In addition, there is an even wider gap amongst different positions within an organization. For example, the average salary for administrative staff would be between 5 million ($219) to 6.5 million ($285) VND while CEOs earn between 100 million ($4384) to 300 million VND ($13,154).

Even though it should not be the case, gender still does affect the average salary in Vietnam. On average, women employees earn 11% less than their male counterparts across all sectors. This pay gap might be less than in other countries, but it is still a discriminator.
