The United Parcel Service (UPS) is an American based package delivery company. UPS has now expanded globally to become one of the biggest multinational delivery companies. While being one of the leading delivery companies in the United States of America, it also operates in some capacity in 220 countries worldwide. The company manages to successfully function by having various means of transporting packages. UPS not only owns delivery buses and freight trucks but also owns cargo and delivery drone airlines.

With the online marketplace expanding daily, we are becoming more and more dependent on delivery services. Where once, we would occasionally see a brown box on our doorstep, it has now become almost routine. From leisure shopping to everyday groceries, everything is now available online and due to its convenience, package delivery services have become an important part of our shopping experience. Our reliance on their services was further increased amid the lockdowns in the pandemic.

To adapt and efficiently function in an ever-expanding online world, UPS hires upwards of 200,000 drivers so that you can get your package on time.

How much does a UPS driver make a year?

The total UPS driver salary in a year can range from $38,000 to $89000 depending on his work experience and his responsibilities. Which begs the question, why do UPS drivers make so much?

UPS prides itself on protecting its workers and providing them with a good quality of life. This also helped UPS gain a spot in the Forbes list of top 200 World’s Best Employers in 2020. They, therefore, not only pay well for overtime but also give bonuses each year. The bonuses of a UPS driver can be as high as $2000. When considering this, a package delivery UPS driver can make around $53,000 a year, while a freight truck driver can make $58,000 a year on average.

How much do UPS Drivers make?

Because UPS uses a variety of transportation means to function like a well-oiled machine, the average UPS driver salary varies according to the driver’s mode of transportation. On average, a UPS driver salary is $25.03 per hour.  This is the basic hourly salary of UPS drivers, which once combined with bonuses and overtime pay, can be much greater.

How much do UPS workers make for overtime?

On average, a UPS driver works 8 hours a day, most of which is spent on the road. Hence, a 40-hour workweek is to be expected. However, most drivers choose to work 11 or 12 hours daily and get paid for overtime. Additionally, peak delivery seasons like around holidays are very busy and drivers can be expected to work on weekends as well. The average UPS driver salary for overtime is $45 an hour.

UPS Driver salary based on Work Experience

As seen in all careers, work experience is valuable and it contributes to a rise in one’s salary. The career of a UPS driver is no exception. What is unique about UPS is that even an entry-level driver with one year of experience is entitled to bonuses, paid vacation as well as overtime pay. Combining all these, he can earn an average of $19 per hour. After 4-5 years of experience, a UPS driver salary can be around $22 per hour. Upon approaching 10 years of experience, it rises to $25 per hour, while 20 years of experience can get you upwards of $35 per hour.

Benefits offered to UPS Drivers

Most giant corporations rake in profits while their workers work long hours with little benefits. However, UPS is well-known for providing its workers with an excellent work-life that consists of bonuses, overtime pay, health insurance, paid leave, and retirement plans. UPS is the largest corporation in the Teamsters Union.

UPS drivers are offered full coverage in their healthcare insurance plans. These drivers also have the opportunity to extend their plan to provide health coverage for family members as well. What’s even more impressive is that UPS also allows its part-time workers to obtain health insurance.

Another attractive feature of working for UPS is the paid vacation days offered to all UPS drivers depending on their work experience. A UPS driver working with the company for one year is entitled to a one week paid vacation. With 5 years experience, a driver is entitled to 3 weeks and after 20 years, they can get 6 whole weeks of paid vacation. These vacation days are separate from 5 Personal Time Off (PTO) days each year.

Up until 2018, UPS offered the standard 401k retirement plans. However, thanks to the Teamsters Union, UPS drivers can now benefit from retirement plans better suited to their interests.

UPS Driver salary according to Location

UPS drivers can expect to earn a pretty similar average pay nationwide, however, certain cities and states do tend to pay more than the national average. Richmond in California is the highest paying city with an average UPS driver salary of $68,700 a year. Other cities in California which also pay slightly above the national average are San Francisco, Palmdale and Santa Clara. The second highest paying city in the US is Stamford in Connecticut with a yearly average UPS driver salary of $66,900.

Although other populous states such as New York do not have a higher average salary, the opportunity of finding a job there is greater. Once a job is secured, the opportunity to grow and advance within a company always exists. The average UPS driver salary in NY is $42,000 a year. In Texas and Michigan, the annual average salary is $34,000.

Since UPS is now a multinational company functioning across most continents, they hire delivery personnel all around the world. Although the exact salary of UPS drivers will vary slightly depending on their location and route, most international drivers can expect to make an average of $39,000 a year.

UPS Driver salary compared to rival companies

Besides UPS, another household name for package deliveries is FedEx. Both UPS and FedEx face another rapidly growing contender in this sector. As Amazon becomes the largest online entity, its delivery company known as Amazon Logistics is a force to be rivalled with.

FedEx employees earn an average of $47,000 a year, which is usually $10,000 less than their counterparts at UPS. Amazon delivery partners earn a yearly average of $64,000. However, it is important to note that Amazon has been in the spotlight several times by their employees who claim to be denied basic benefits and having harsh and inhospitable work environments. Amazon also actively resists union efforts within its company unlike other companies such as UPS.

UPS Driver jobs

With the growth of industries online, we have become increasingly dependent on the convenience of receiving goods from the comfort of our homes. This provides an opportunity for package delivery companies to expand. Hence, UPS driver vacancies are present quite frequently, and getting an entry-level job is not too difficult. If you are above 21 years of age with a clean criminal and driving record, the job is easy to obtain. UPS job openings are available on their website (www.jobs-ups.com). If you are in the UK, jobs are available on www. jobs-ups. the UK.
